Fight Club director David Fincher has signed up to give the Swedish thriller a Hollywood makeover - and now he must choose his leading lady.
The girls will go head-to-head for the coveted role, which is said to be "edgy, sexy and demanding."
Mulligan may already have an Oscar nomination under her belt, but Fincher will have a soft spot for the Twilight star after he helped launch her career in 2002 with the Jodie Foster film Panic Room.
Who do you think would be better in the lead role, Kristen Stewart or Carey Mulligan? Let us know.
This isn't the first time the pair have had their eye on the same prize.
Both girls competed for the Orange Rising Star Award at this year's Baftas, with Stewart crowned the winner.
But Mulligan did one better, nabbing the Best Actress in a Leading Role gong for An Education, beating Meryl Streep in the process.
The film follows an unconventional heroine who helps a journalist track down a missing woman.
It is based on the bestselling novel by Stieg Larsson. A Swedish version with English subtitles is currently on release, but the trilogy's phenomenal sales throughout the world have inspired the Hollywood treatment.
